Tranquilty Garden

Our Tranquility Garden is located behind the church on what for many years was the
playground for the children attending the Presbyterian Center for Children. When the
The Center closed in September 2023, and all that was left of the playground was a mound of
soil that had been created for the children to climb and an unsightly area of dying grass
and weeds.
A member of the church had a vision of the area becoming a “tranquility garden,” hoping
it would become a serene space, free from the demands of social media and the hustle
and bustle of daily life, a place where one could unwind and find calm, often featuring
elements that promote relaxation such as water features, soothing, calming colors, bird
songs and a clear entrance to mark the transition from the outside world.
On May 31, 2024, the transformation of the space began. A member of the congregation
volunteered a Bobcat and the soil mound was leveled and the sod removed. This began
a steady flow of contributions throughout the summer: newspapers for weed control,
plants from their own gardens, funds to purchase gravel for paths, mulch for weed
control, a small sculpture, security lighting, Adirondack chairs and other features, and
helped with the digging and planting. It had truly become a “friendship” garden—the
contributors were members of the congregation who watched the progress of each
Sunday after worship as well as non-member neighbors and friends.
Finally, at the end of the summer of 2024, the garden was finished, and signage was
added inviting all to enjoy the new Tranquility Garden
